BASQUIAT. BOOM FOR REAL
In the late 1970s, Jean-Michel Basquiat teamed up with Al Diaz to write enigÂmatic grafÂfiti stateÂments across the city under the pseuÂdonym SAMO©. Soon he was drawing in his own blood, collaging baseÂball cards, creating his own clothing, and painting on doors, window frames, and enorÂmous home-made canvases. Today, Basquiat (1960–1988) is recogÂnised as one of the most signifÂiÂcant artists of the 20th century. Having come of age in the post-punk underÂground art scene in Lower Manhattan, he conquered the art world and gained wideÂspread interÂnaÂtional recogÂniÂtion, becoming the youngest artist ever to particÂiÂpate in docuÂmenta in Kassel in 1982.
Basquiat’s raw, vibrant imagery is matched by a starÂtling erudiÂtion, seen in the fragÂments of bold, capiÂtalised text that abound in his works. These bear witness to his encyÂclopaedic interÂests and his expeÂriÂence as a young artist with no formal training. More than thirty years since Basquiat’s last major exhiÂbiÂtion in Germany, the SCHIRN is presenting a major survey devoted to this AmerÂican artist, organÂised in collabÂoÂraÂtion with Barbican Art Gallery, London. The exhiÂbiÂtion is also the first to focus on Basquiat’s relaÂtionÂship to music, text, film and teleÂviÂsion, situÂating the artist’s formiÂdable talents within a broader cultural context.
