Best In Show: Dogs In Australian Art
This exhibition is a celebration of the dog, our relationship with it, and how artists have chosen to express this in their work over the past 220 years.
There are more than 130 individual dogs on show – painted, sculpted, drawn or printed by 64 known artists. We see them as markers of status and wealth, prized specimens for show, working and sporting dogs, beloved companions, and symbolic inclusions in allegorical artworks.
Almost all of the works in this exhibition have been borrowed, requiring 40 separate loans from public and private collections throughout Australia. It is arguably the largest and most comprehensive exhibition ever to be assembled around the theme of dogs in Australian art.
We hope you enjoy your encounters with the hounds, terriers, spaniels, poodles, heelers, dingoes and mongrels to be found in these works – produced by some of this country’s most distinguished artists.
