Bram Braam: Like a Crack in the Wall

Apr 17, 2025 - May 17, 2025

galerie burster karlsruhe is pleased to present LIKE A CRACK IN THE WALL, a solo exhibition by the artist Bram Braam.

In this new body of work, Braam reveals a subtle yet compelling shift-both geographically and artistically. After many years of living and working in Berlin, Braam has returned to a more rural environment near his hometown on the German-Dutch border. His new works reflect this transition: they are more painterly, more immediate, and marked by a newfound sensitivity in their material presence.

His earlier influences remain present-materials such as architectural fragments, wall textures, paint, graffiti, and street posters resurface. The past echoes through works titled Chasing Shadows and Urban Echo. Braam continues to explore the boundary between reality and abstraction, and his practice thrives on contradictions-bringing together opposing forces to create something "in between." He examines the tension between construction and deconstruction, reality and fiction, nature and architecture.

His sculptures and installations often reflect the dynamic interplay between chaos and order, highlighting how seemingly disparate elements can coexist and even enhance one another. This fusion results in thought-provoking pieces that challenge our perception of space and transformation.

While Braam's earlier work was deeply influenced by the visual language of urban architecture, Brutalism, and modernist utopias, his recent series also embraces the natural, the intuitive, and the fragmented. Sweeping green hues, textured surfaces, and a cartographic sense of order evoke landscape, light, and time-offering a quiet observation of the world and a heightened sensitivity to the organic and the authentic. There is a persistent tension at play: between city and nature, control and chaos, modernity and memory. The idea of utopia-central to Braam's earlier work-lingers in the background like a ghost image. No longer tied to idealized visions of the future or modernist city planning, Braam now examines how these ideas persist, decay, and morph within contemporary landscapes, both physical and psychological.
