Bridget Riley: Paintings and Related Work

Bridget Riley is one of the most significant and original painters of our time. This Sunley Room exhibition will enable visitors to investigate how Riley鈥檚 work relates to the National Gallery Collection.
Recent work
The exhibition focuses upon Bridget Riley鈥檚 most recent paintings. Two of Riley鈥檚 works will be made directly on to the walls of the exhibition space. Riley and her studio will create a new wall drawing, 鈥楥omposition with Circles 7鈥�, especially for the longest wall of the Sunley Room. In addition a version of the wall-painting, 鈥楢rcadia鈥� 鈥� last seen at the major 2008 retrospective in Paris 鈥� will be recreated on a larger scale.
Riley and the Old Masters
From her days as a student, the National Gallery has held a special place in Riley鈥檚 artistic imagination. Time and again she has turned to compositions by the Old Masters for inspiration, learning from their uses of colour and line. The exhibition will include one of Bridget Riley鈥檚 first endeavours as an emerging artist: a copy of the Gallery鈥檚 Portrait of a Man (Self Portrait?) (1433) by Jan van Eyck.
At the artist鈥檚 request, a selection of paintings from the Gallery鈥檚 collection will be included in the exhibition, including Mantegna鈥檚 Introduction of the Cult of Cybele to Rome (1505鈥�6), Raphael鈥檚 Saint Catherine of Alexandria (about 1507), and three studies by Seurat.
