In conjunction with The First Impressionist: Eug猫ne Boudin the Mellon galleries will feature a display of bronzes by Pierre-Jules M锚ne. The sculptor was a favorite of Paul Mellon鈥檚 and this installation includes 11 works by the artist in the Paul Mellon Collection. In 19th-century France, a movement of sculptors specializing in small animal bronzes emerged during the Romantic period (in French, they are called Les Animaliers). Pierre-Jules M锚ne was a premier member of the group and was surpassed in popularity only by Antoine-Louis Barye. While Barye鈥檚 sculptures featured exotic animals and gruesome scenes M猫ne focused on European animals and sporting subjects. This installation showcases the artist鈥檚 range from complex compositions such as After the Hunt in Scotland (influenced by a painting by the English artist Sir Edwin Landseer) to small, single figures such as his attentive Setters. Most tender are his scenes of horses observed in nature, free of human influence.
