Bruce Helander: Collages and "Erased de Rizzie"

Jul 31, 2021 - Aug 15, 2021

MM Fine Art is pleased to announce an exhibition of recent collages by Bruce Helander, opening Saturday, July 31 in Southampton.

This new series utilizes vintage paper printed during the 19th and 20th centuries, which Helander cuts into random shapes and rearranges into abstract expressionist compositions that often retain pieces of narrative imagery. In addition to the collage series, Helander is presenting 鈥淓rased de Rizzie,鈥 an original drawing by his friend, Dan Rizzie, which has been erased as a humorous homage to the original 1953 鈥淓rased de Kooning鈥 by Robert Rauschenberg (Collection of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art).

Helander is a highly regarded collage artist whose work is in over fifty museum collections, including the Guggenheim, Whitney, Smithsonian, LACMA and The Metropolitan. He is a member of the Florida Artists Hall of Fame and is a former White House Fellow of the National Endowment for the Arts. He was a contributor to The New Yorker and was a four-time recipient of grants from the New York Foundation for the Arts. His work has been widely reviewed in numerous publications, including Art in America, ARTnews, The New Criterion and The New York Times. Kenworth Moffett, former director of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, observed 鈥淚f there was a Pulitzer Prize for collage, Helander would surely win it.鈥 Tom Wolfe said, 鈥淗elander out-collages Braque!鈥
