Catarina Dias: Mamute

Sep 20, 2019 - Nov 02, 2019
Every one of Catarina Dias鈥 cut-out poems refer to the search for a body 鈥 鈥渁 poem in search of a body without an I鈥, in the words of Maria Gabriela Llansol. A body without self because it is convoked by an abrupt intuition of itself. It deals with something that is already beyond its possibilities, it always includes some other which is to come. Read this with love, read this without love, as we can read in one of Catarina鈥檚 drawings. An expansion that is part of a search for another, which materializes in the  reunion with and acknowledgement of oneself.

In the English language, the word mammoth qualifies the incommensurable. Curiously, the native peoples of Siberia believed the colossal extinct being behind the word was a water spirit who dwelled underground. They believed it only to visit the surface at night and to die instantly whenever spotted by someone. Because of this, men lived in the expectation of seeing one, but only knew of the traces they left behind, clearly visible by the first light of morning. These traces they saw at dawn, we can find throughout the work of Catarina Dias, in the translation of this unspeakable force, named and drawn, that shines light into our own condition.nion with and acknowledgement of oneself.
