In the wake of impressionism, a younger generation of European painters insisted that art should convey more than the appearance of things. It should change our perceptions of reality. This exhibition features nine paintings from the distinguished collection of Mr. and Mrs. Julian H. Robertson of New York City. Each work is a vivid time capsule from a now-distant era when artists saw art as a passionate quest of discovery and believed devoutly they could change society as surely as Einstein or the Wright Brothers. Included in the exhibition are three striking portraits by
Pablo Picasso, as well as a delightful portrait of a young woman in Spanish costume by
Henri Matisse. In addition to portraits, the exhibition presents an intriguing studio interior by Georges Braque and two contrasting visions of nature:
Andr茅 Derain鈥檚 landscape from the summery south of France and
Emil Nolde鈥檚 alarming depiction of a small boat alone on the North Sea. Both paintings are a counterpoint to
Fernand L茅ger鈥檚 jazzy industrial abstraction, a celebration of the Machine Age.
