Collection Focus III: In Chicago

Jan 28, 2011 - Mar 30, 2011
The "In Chicago" portfolio is extraordinary for the historically significant photographers it includes, and for its focus on images of the city of Chicago, a place of significance to each. The photographers: Harold Allen, Harry Callahan, Barbara Crane, Yasuhiro Ishimoto, Nathan Lerner, Luis Medina, Richard Nickel, David Plowden, Arthur Siegal, Aaron Siskind, John Szarkowski, and Bob Thall. The photographs were taken between 1935 and 1978. In addition to the narrow focus of subject, Chicago, a strength of the portfolio is its breadth: it includes iconic images by important 20th century photographers at the height of their careers (Callahan, Siskind), and also images from photographers at the beginning of their careers (Nickel, Thall). Some of the first photographers to study at László Moholy-Nagy's New Bauhaus* after it opened in Chicago in 1936 are represented (Allen, Lerner, Siegal). Many of the photographers spent their careers in Chicago.

The In Chicago portfolio was acquired with "patron trade or sell" funds. A number of Samek patrons including Ray '83 and Anne '83 Merritt, and Doug '84 and Ellen Smith have generously given fine photographs to the Permanent Collection over the years. This has included duplicate prints and portfolios given expressly to be traded for other artworks or sold with the proceeds to be used to acquire works that will strengthen the collection. On behalf of the Samek Art Gallery, Bucknell University and the university community, we thank the Merritts and Smiths for making this important acquisition possible, and for their ongoing support of this important university resource.
