Corey Mason: Rising Into the Sun
Achenbach Hagemeier is delighted to present the solo exhibition Corey Mason: Rising into the sun by the US artist Corey Mason. After two solo exhibitions in D眉sseldorf and Marfa, Texas, this is the first presentation of Mason鈥檚 new works in Berlin.
The exhibition was originally planned for April and had already been completed when the USA then joined us in lockdown. Corey Mason, who was born in Texas and has lived in Raleigh, North Carolina with his family for some time, spent the past weeks and months鈥攍ike most people鈥攁t home. A difficult and challenging time. A time for reflection, contemplation, and hope. Doubts arise鈥攊s what I am doing really the right thing? Am I satisfied with what I am doing? For Mason, the answer was a resounding yes.
But a new work needed to be created for the opening in September. The exhibition that had been prepared was no longer suitable for the current mood and Mason needed something new and hopeful for himself, his family, and for the audience that would see these paintings.
For ten years, Corey Mason has been creating drawings, paintings, and sculptures, but silkscreen printing has recently become his favorite medium to carry his message of hope and healing to the outside world. Mason calls his new works Leaf paintings. He came up with the idea for his leaf motif back in 2018. It reminds him of his early childhood, when he still lived in Texas and would supplement his pocket money by gardening in the neighborhood. He reworked the motif during lockdown and began painting at home on an iPad. The current situation meant that working in the studio was impossible, so the pictures were initially created digitally and he was only able to transform them into analog silkscreen printing templates later, when the situation on the ground finally permitted it. For him, this was an act of liberation and self-realization.
