Correspondences
Correspondences invites viewers to discover analogies, similarities and contrasts in works of art.
The display draws on the observation of German art historian Aby Warburg, that artists at different times and places and unknown to one another create similar forms and styles.
Three works by Brisbane-based artist Ian Friend created between 1993 and 2002 set the context for the display. Friend’s watercolours are compared with a number of works in the collection, including those by mid-twentieth-century British artists Ben Nicholson and Victor Pasmore and the Australian artist, Fred Williams.
