Dan Mitchell: Posters

Nov 26, 2021 - Jan 30, 2022

Schwarzescaf茅 at Luma Westbau presents the first survey show of Dan Mitchell鈥檚 posters. The exhibition of more than two hundred and fifty posters from three decades spans the complete work of the artist in this medium. It coincides with the launch of the artist鈥檚 first monograph Pocket Guide: Dan Mitchell Posters published by Edition Patrick Frey.

Dan Mitchell鈥檚 confrontation with the medium of the poster started with a work commissioned by the artist Josephine Pryde. Mitchell ran the project spaces Poster Studio and Posterstudio in the 1990s along with Pryde and the artists Merlin Carpenter, Anthony Davies and Nils Norman. Since then he has concentrated on 鈥渟upplements鈥, producing hundreds of posters as artworks, as commissions for artists and exhibitions, for his own magazine Hard Mag and for the Artist Self-Publishers鈥 Fair (ASP) he co-founded with Sara MacKillop.

The work in this exhibition deals with the ugly, repulsive and aggressive imagery and language, experienced digitally on smartphones, in printed magazines and on billboards within the noisy urban context. Based on the premise of the poster and the method of the assemblage, the artworks aim to counteract pornographic image production and oppressive forms of image manipulation. However, instead of taking a detached stand, Mitchell operates in the midst of the 鈥榤ess鈥 and deploys techniques of self-sabotage. His exaggerated and conflicting use of obsessive-compulsive imagery challenges the deceptive thrust of propaganda. His work does not lend itself to facile consumption as a luxury good or censorship by the algorithms of social media.
