David Ostrowski: The F Word
Cologne-based painter David Ostrowski (born 1981) is, despite his tender age, already exhibiting internationally and is now coming to ARKEN with some completely new material.
Striving for errors
When Ostrowski paints a picture, he subjects it to a drastic range of experiments. Exposing the canvas to a torrent of errors, accidents, unmotivated actions and painting over what works best undermines classic virtues such as composition, style and striving for perfection.
Even so the results are far from chaotic. Instead, stunning paintings emerge with large, abstract surfaces and few colours. The paintings are white, almost empty, with brief, simple traces of colour from a spray can.
Painting per se
For Ostrowski, the painting process is a constant analysis of the act of painting itself, where beauty is the goal, but where the path towards the goal is paved with obstacles and decisions about what can be omitted. The beauty occurs in the unexpected encounter between the picture鈥檚 faults and mishaps.
