Decentering in Ceramics

Feb 28, 2023 - Apr 22, 2023

Richard Saltoun Gallery presents decentering in Ceramics, a group show that celebrates the artistic value of ceramics 鈥 historically considered a minor, decorative art 鈥 and highlights its expressive possibilities through the work of eight women artists. From the proto-conceptual experiments of Nedda Guidi and Franca Maran貌, two key figures of the Italian avant-garde movements of the 60s and 70s, to the queer performativity of Florence Peake's work, passing through the community-based practice of Chiara Camoni and the post-historical reinterpretation of the myth of Raffaela Naldi Rossano, to arrive at political and poetic formalisations concerning the body, identity, and gender by Gaia Fugazza, Holly Stevenson, and Zoe Williams

decentering in Ceramics is curated by Giulia Pollicita, researcher and curator of the artist residency programme Laboratorio Piramide, Rome, a cultural project supported by Regione Lazio that promotes the encounter between contemporary art and craftsmanship. As part of this programme, in 2022 Gaia Fugazza, Florence Peake, Holly Stevenson and Zoe Williams created the works on display in the historic Bottega Paolelli in the Bravetta district, experimenting with materials, techniques and processes of the Italian tradition.
