Digging Deeper: Uncovering Roman Carlisle
Carlisle was the sole city on the northern frontier of the Roman Empire. The largest fort along Hadrian鈥檚 Wall was in modern-day Stanwix. In 2017 an archaeological investigation discovered the remains of a 3rd-century Roman bathhouse at Carlisle Cricket Club, the largest known building along the wall. Since then, community excavations have followed, unearthing thousands of objects that will better help us understand Carlisle鈥檚 Roman past.
In 2022, we displayed finds and told the stories of those involved in the dig in the Uncovering Roman Carlisle exhibition. This year we鈥檙e over the moon to present even more exciting material from the latest excavations in Digging Deeper: Uncovering Roman Carlisle.
You鈥檒l have seen the huge Roman heads uncovered earlier this year all over the news. From 23 September, it will be our pleasure to let you see them up close.
