Echoed Visions
In the last 10 years, photography has gone through the most radical changes in its short history. It鈥檚 the beginning of the sharp decline in Analogue photography and the explosion of Digital. The average person takes 4 times as many photos as they did 10 years ago and 10% of all photographs were taken in the past 12 months. Exceptional images can be easily created with a simple click of a Smartphone. The image can be reproduced instantly and seen all over the world? Does the overload of images change they way we perceive and view the world around us or indeed how we view the object of a photograph itself? And where does it leave photography within the art world?
As a visual artist who has worked almost exclusively with photography for 10 years, Kurt Tong鈥檚 career has developed alongside this radicle change in photography. The originality of the idea, the execution and the boundaries of the very medium of photography are something he ponders constantly.
What constitutes photography and what constitutes art? Pushing and questioning photography鈥檚 boundaries, Tong attempts to answer these questions through re-contextualizing photographs, photographic ideas and reconceptualising the very notion of photography as 鈥榙rawing with light鈥�.
Inspired by his surroundings and personal experience, Tong has created a very diverse series of mixed media pieces, from resin to neon light; from NASA images to family photos. On one hand, the exhibition explores photography as an art medium. On the other hand, with some of the pieces consciously appropriated from well known artists, whilst others loosely influenced by works that have inspired him over the years; it further questions, just as photography is reproducible, if art is often just Echoed Visions.
