Ellen Cantor: Visual DNA - The Language Of Photographs

Mar 07, 2020 - Apr 18, 2020

Ellen Cantor, in her third solo exhibition with DNJ Gallery, observes time and memory, and together how someone or something is transformed within a certain period (from morning to night, summer to winter, or one year to the next). 鈥淏y photographing and re-contextualizing precious memories, I have sought to understand how life proceeds, and then, ultimately disappears. I document the artifacts of the past in order to enrich the present,鈥 she explains.

In this body of artwork, she causes the viewers to look closely at the vintage photographs, and ultimately note what is the most significant part and gesture. Colored and cut-out shapes are applied or cropped to focus the eye of the audience onto a specific body part. Ellen Cantor invites questions; actual participation answers them, and we absorb a visual language of the photograph.
