Ernest Cole: Photographer

Sep 03, 2014 - Dec 06, 2014

Ernest Cole (1940鈥90), one of South Africa鈥檚 first black photojournalists, compassionately but unflinchingly portrayed the lives of black people as they negotiated apartheid鈥檚 racist laws and oppression. Ernest Cole: Photographer features over 100 original, rare black-and-white gelatin prints from Cole鈥檚 remarkable archive. While many of Cole鈥檚 photographs expose segregation, destitution, and violence, others depict intimate moments of children at play, mothers smiling, couples dancing, and friends joking. This presentation of Cole鈥檚 striking photographs, with his own incisive and illuminating captions, is the first major solo museum exhibition of this artist who, after the publication of his book House of Bondage in 1967, was arrested and then fled South Africa, never to return. Organized by the Hasselblad Foundation in Gothenburg, Sweden, the exhibition is accompanied by a fully illustrated catalogue.
