Erub Erwer Meta: Design Directions
Design Directions is a group exhibition that presents
each artist鈥檚 aesthetic expression of culture and identity through works on
paper and related ceramic and textile designs.
Erub Erwer Meta is a small but expanding group of artists from
four tribal groups in Erub (Darnley Island), which is 160km north east of
Queensland鈥檚 Cape York Peninsula and one of the most remote communities in
Australia.
From its beginnings twenty years ago as a craft group, Ekkilau, the Art Centre, focuses on revitalising traditional cultural arts practices of the Erubam Le (Torres Strait Islander people of Erub), working across a range of mediums and disciplines. Represented artists include Jimmy Thaiday, Sedey Stephen, Racy Oui-Pitt, Florence Gutchen, and Emma Gela whose works are artistically inspired by totems and traditional and contemporary stories about their land, sea and family connections.
