Explorations

Mar 23, 2023 - May 20, 2023

Explorations, curated by Bruce Brown, is centered on this broad concept of "exploration." Each of the four photographers in the show explores strikingly different environments, but the work of each evokes the wonder of discovery, whether it be from untamed nature, discarded objects, different perspectives, or intimate portraits.

Capturing perhaps the most traditional notion of "exploration," Knapp Hudson's stunning photographs depict sublime nature in its extremes, from crashing waterfalls to sun-parched deserts to tranquil cypress swamps.  In stark contrast, Thomas Birtwistle's work finds beauty in the detritus of human activity, such as discarded plates, cups, and cigarette butts.  Jon Linn's aerial drone photographs capture where these two environments meet - bridges spanning rushing rivers, some with banks lined with lush greenery, others lined with billowing factory smokestacks.  David Etnier, on the other hand, explores the explorers with portraits of artists and their studios.  Despite their disparate imagery, these four photographers share a strong exploratory impulse, the imaginative power to perceive art in the ordinary, and the skill to capture and convey their experienced wonder to the viewer.
