The exhibition underscores the artists鈥� seminal contributions to the transformation, beginning in the 1960s, of the established genres of photography such as aesthetic (expressive), documentary (objective), and collage (constructed), as well as the development of hybrid forms. Their work frequently exploits the lack of a clear-cut division between photography as reportage and as artifice, while also exposing the semiotics of photography鈥檚 hidden conventions and making explicit the politics of photographic representation. 

Works in the exhibition include individual photographs and photographic series, film and video productions, text-and-image installations, and sculptures and paintings that incorporate photographic elements. The exhibition also examines the world of digital imagery, virtual reality, and simulated representation, technologies that effectively close the age of mass reproduction or replication that had previously informed our conception of photography.
