Flatbed Press: An Exhibition of Prints
Moody Gallery is pleased to announce the exhibition Flatbed Press: A Selection of Prints. This exhibition showcases masterworks created at Flatbed Press in Austin by contemporary international artists. All the works are multiple originals- etchings, lithographs, woodcuts, monotypes, photogravures- created in Flatbed studios in the thriving arts district of East Austin, near the University of Texas. Gallery artists include Terry Allen, Luis Jim茅nez, Mary McCleary, Melissa Miller, Andrea Rosenberg, Randy Twaddle, and Liz Ward. Also included are prints by John Alexander, Bale Allen, Alice Leora Briggs, Keith Carter, Suzi Davidoff, Trenton Doyle Hancock, Billy Hassell, Jules Buck Jones, Sharon Kopriva, Bert Long, Liliana Porter, Burton Pritzker, Linda Ridgeway, Dan Rizzie, Margo Sawyer, Lee Smith III, Mark Lesly Smith, Hills Snyder, Julie Speed, James Surls, Casey Williams, and Joan Winter. Working with Master Printer Katherine Brimberry and her assistant printers, each artist created a matrix of copper, stone, wood, or Plexiglas, from which the small editions of multiple originals were impressed onto 100% rag paper. There are no 鈥渞eproductions鈥 created at Flatbed. The prints vary in style, technique, subject, and size, but are all the unique creations of the artists by their own hands. Some of the techniques derive from the 17th century, and some involve the latest digital resources. The artist鈥檚 experience in the shop is often an experimental blend of old and new printmaking processes. Each project is artist-driven; the shop鈥檚 motto is- 鈥淲hat would happen if . . .?鈥 Flatbed Press was established in 1989 by Mark Lesly Smith and Katherine Brimberry, and has become one of the preeminent collaborative printmaking workshops in the United States. In 2017 they both were inducted into the Austin Arts Hall of Fame. Brimberry is the Owner, Director, and Master Printer. Smith departed the press in 2012 to pursue his own artwork. Their comprehensive book about the press, Flatbed Press at 25 published in 2016 by the University of Texas Press, is available for purchase.
