From Our Sibling Museum
Five artworks by Manolo Millares, Gerardo Rueda, Antoni T脿pies and Gustavo Torner, on loan from the Museo de Arte Abstracto Espa帽ol in Cuenca, are on display in the Museu Fundaci贸n Juan March. They are identified by black labels.
The Museo de Arte Abstracto Espa帽ol was founded in 1966 by the painter Fernando Z贸bel. A museum of contemporary art was then an oddity in a country lacking in cultural institutions. This grassroots initiative connected the work of a whole generation of pioneering artists with a new public; it paved the way for other younger creators and offered resources to students, researchers, and art critics as well as art lovers. The museum opened to great international acclaim, reaping praise from the likes of Alfred H. Barr, MoMA鈥檚 first director, who called it 鈥渢he most beautiful small museum in the world鈥.
In 1981 Z贸bel bequeathed his life project to Fundaci贸n Juan March, which has overseen it ever since. The Museo de Arte Abstracto Espa帽ol will be partially closed for climatization works for a few months; in the meantime, a touring exhibition will make its history and collection known in five venues across Europe and America.
