Geometry as a poetic impulse

Apr 03, 2025 - Jul 03, 2025

DAN Galeria presents 鈥淕eometry as a Poetic Impulse鈥, curated by Maria Alice Milliet. It is an exhibition that recalls, with museological sensitivity, the unique strength of geometric expressions in mid-20th century Brazilian art. The exhibition overcomes the rigidity of concrete movement, revealing dialogues and poetic intersections between fundamental artists of that period.

The exhibition stands out not only for the excellence of the works presented, but also for the subtle and necessary intersection between different artistic approaches. It exhibits works by artists such as Judith Lauand鈥攔ecently celebrated at the MoMA, Dion铆sio del Santo, H茅rcules Barsotti, who, with their powerful colors, demonstrate that geometry is not cold, but charged with lyricism and poetic intensity.

Emblematic works by Max Bill, Rubem Valentim, Alfredo Volpi, Franz Weissmann, Geraldo de Barros, Ivan Serpa and S茅rgio Camargo appear side by side with rare pieces such as the 鈥淎nimal鈥 and the 鈥淢odulated Surface鈥 by Lygia Clark, suggesting that geometric abstraction has always moved towards a profound humanization of form.

Also noteworthy is the inclusion of rarely exhibited works, such as the surprising watch by Lothar Charoux, notable for the originality of the design and the artist, and the painting on wood by Cuban Sandu Darie, which expand the dialogue between geometric art and the Latin American context, demonstrating the continental relevance of this movement.

鈥淕eometry as a Poetic Impulse鈥 testifies to an artistic rupture that faced profound cultural resistance in Brazil, especially due to the dominance of a figurativism that insisted on remaining a legitimate representative of Brazilian identity. The exhibition highlights, above all, that geometry is not a mere cold structure, but rather a vehicle of intense visual emotion, thus, it proposes to review one of the most vibrant and challenging phases of modern art in Brazil.
