Hans Haacke

Nov 08, 2024 - Feb 09, 2025

Hans Haacke (b. 1936) has shaped 鈥減olit颅ical art鈥 to a greater extent than any other artist of his gener颅a颅tion. Keen crit颅i颅cism of insti颅tu颅tions, polit颅ical aware颅ness, and an uncom颅pro颅mising defense of demo颅c颅ratic prin颅ci颅ples to the point of activism all char颅ac颅terize his approach. His work is marked by direct颅ness and theo颅ret颅ical clarity, and yet it is poetic, metaphor颅ical, ecolog颅ical, and in many respects highly topical at the same time. More than once his contro颅ver颅sial artistic contri颅bu颅tions to contem颅po颅rary discourse have been excluded from exhi颅bi颅tions. In a wide-ranging retro颅spec颅tive, the SCHIRN will be exam颅ining Haacke鈥檚 influ颅en颅tial oeuvre from 1959 to the present day. He has pursued a variety of artistic strate颅gies, working from an early stage in the fields of ecology and science and taking up the approaches of, for example, the group ZERO and minimal art, as well as concep颅tual art, art in public space, and poster art. The exhi颅bi颅tion at the SCHIRN, with some 70 paint颅ings, objects, photographs, and instal颅la颅tions, demon颅strates how Haacke became one of the most impor颅tant polit颅ical artists on the inter颅na颅tional art stage.
