This exhibition includes a series of photographs based upon research into the tunnels built under the Berlin Wall, a film showing a confrontation of East-West iconography and a model viewing platform, an object of Western propaganda during the Cold War.
All the works in this exhibition by Crawford and 骋耻茅苍别补耻 allude to an urban landscape in possession of a highly contested past. For four months during the summer of 2009, the artists were in Berlin exploring the city鈥檚 politicised landscape. A series of photographic works and a 16mm film were produced. Since 1982 the artists have been regular visitors to the city and in 1992 made their first collaborative project there on 16 mm film 鈥楩estung Europa (shifting peripheries)鈥�, a film that showed how the Berlin Wall was antithetical to the mobility and circulation characteristic of a modern city. This film was their starting point - revisiting scenes from the film 17 years later and photographing them.

Louise and St茅phan have worked together since 1992, collaborating initially on 16mm film and since 2000 on photographic work. This combination of film and photography now informs much of their work on inner city landscapes. Street Level hosted a solo show by the artists in 2003/4, 鈥楥inema鈥�, a selection of photographs on the ambiguity of perception of the city at night and the change darkness and artificial light make to the urban topography; the camera illuminating parts of a city that are purposefully left in darkness and forgotten.
