In Between (1997-2003): Fooling Around With Documents
Depo hosts the exhibition IN BETWEEN (1997-2003): Fooling Around With Documents, curated by Nergis Abıyeva, between May 22 – July 12, 2025.
The archival exhibition IN BETWEEN (1997-2003): Fooling Around With Documents presents a selection from the archives of four friends, a group of artists; Gülçin Aksoy (1965-2024), Nancy Atakan (b. 1946), Gül Ilgaz (b. 1962) and Neriman Polat (b. 1968). It surveys primary sources such as documents, photographs and videos in the archives of the artists who came together in the early 1990s to break away from the traditional art education they received at the Academy and to incorporate the forms of expression they borrowed from conceptual art with a collective approach. Taking its title from a sentence in Nancy Atakan’s archive, the exhibition revisits six earlier shows coorganized by the artists. It examines a period starting from the first public output of their collaboration, Arada at Atatürk Cultural Center in 1997, to the exhibition titled Families Only at Karşı Sanat in 2003, which expanded its participants and took on a more collective form.
Exploring the sisterhood and togetherness of the artists, the exhibition opens up concepts such as collaboration and friendship in art production, as well as ways of exhibition making. IN BETWEEN (1997-2003): Fooling Around With Documents presents an alternative narrative as a contribution to the contemporary art historiography of the 1990s while highlighting the humour and joy of the group.
