In Love with Macao: Calligraphy and Paintings of Macao

May 05, 2018 - Aug 12, 2018
Macao is one of the earliest points for China’s exchanges with the West, where Chinese and Western cultures meet and blended since long, with Western trends and techniques influencing several art forms. But the truly traditional arts of Chinese calligraphy, painting and seal carving have maintained their strong vitality all along.   Also Macao has been one of the few places in China's territory where artistic activities were not affected by wars in its recent chaotic history. Notably in the 20th century, during the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, Macao provided a safe showcase platform and creative cradle for many excellent Guangdong painters, who bequeathed to Macao art world a splendid array of traditional Chinese calligraphy, painting and seal carving arts.   The Macao Museum of Art (MAM) has always been dedicated to collecting, protecting, displaying and studying Macao fine art works, trying hard to collect, exhibit and publish works by local based calligraphers, painters and seal carvers, including those pioneers – be they native, immigrant or sojourning artists in Macao.  Aimed at offering a glimpse of the creative endeavours of the many artists who developed a special connection to Macao, as well as a feel into the zeitgeist of different eras, MAM presents In Love with Macao – Calligraphy and Paintings of Macao.   Through exhibitions and publications, the evolution of traditional Chinese painting and calligraphy and seal carving arts in Macao has been systematically arranged and showcased, and research materials have been gathered for further studies, hoping to turn Macao into an exchange and cooperation platform where "Chinese culture is mainstream, coexisting with others."   This exhibition shows a total of 90 pieces/sets of artworks by late calligraphers, painters and seal carvers who lived in Macao from the 1930s to the 21st century or somehow had ties with Macao, including Shang Yanliu, Zheng Jin, Gao Jianfu, Li Xiangen, and Lin Jin, among others. Due to the special geopolitics of Macao territory, many artists moved in to live or sojourned here to escape war and turmoil, and a few of them would go on to leave a distinct influence on modern Chinese calligraphy and painting. With their help, calligraphy and painting art in Macao developed by leaps and bounds. Through the actual works, this exhibition aims to raise the public's interest in native culture, and provide an understanding of the role and contributions of Macao in the wider context of Chinese painting and calligraphy.
