Intertwined: Contemporary Baskets from the Sara and David Lieberman Collection

Mar 16, 2010 - Sep 12, 2010
Intertwined: Contemporary Baskets from the Sara and David Lieberman Collection, on view from March 16, 2010 and through September 12, 2010, presents the internationally acclaimed collection of baskets and fiber sculpture has been assembled by Sara and David Lieberman over the course of three decades. With their passion for collecting contemporary craft and their exceptional openness to new forms and ideas, the Liebermans have assembled one of the best compilations of contemporary baskets in the country.

Intertwined provides an international look at contemporary basket making, offering insight into the evolution of the basket from a useful object to a work of art and challenging the notion of what defines a basket. The exhibition includes more than 70 traditional and non-traditional baskets. The baskets utilize a range of materials and techniques from traditional organic to commercial and often surprising media. Beginning with early innovators in the fields, the Lieberman collection features works by Ed Rossbach, Katherine Westphal, Sally Black, Kiyomi Iwata, Kazuaki Honma, Dorothy Gill Barnes, Carol Eckert John McQueen, Elsie Holiday, Ferne Jacobs, Norma Minkowitz, Fran Reed, Lisa Telford, Kay Kahn, and many more. Japanese bamboo sculptures and works by Native American artists are also featured prominently in the exhibition.

The Lieberman Collection charts a range of artists and approaches, and it offers a broad overview of an art form that is a fascinating blend of traditional and contemporary. Their active collecting coincides with a fifteen-year period of innovation and energy in the field.

Intertwined: Contemporary Baskets from the Sara and David Lieberman Collection is organized by the Arizona State University Art Museum, Tempe, Arizona, and curated by Senior Curator Heather S. Lineberry and Jane Sauer. Presentation of the exhibition at MAD is made possible, in part, through the generosity of the Inner Circle, a leadership Museum support group.
