Intervalo

May 17, 2025 - Sep 21, 2025

Since the mid-1990s, the work of Alexandre Estrela has stood out for its original and idiosyncratic way of blending and layering a wide range of fields, themes, and references鈥攆rom installation and drawing to moving image. Among his recent solo exhibitions, Flat Bells at MoMA: Museum of Modern Art (New York), 2024, is particularly noteworthy. The artist has also taken part in numerous group exhibitions at institutions and biennials, and together with Ana Baliza, curates farO, a Lisbon-based project space that brings together a community of artists.

Following the 鈥渘aturalist鈥 approach of Nature Bores the Monster (2024), an exhibition at Culturgest (Lisbon), Alexandre Estrela presents at CIAJG the second part of a triptych鈥攁 kind of interlude that engages with animation and cartoon aesthetics. In INTERVALO, Estrela explores the exhibition itself as a medium, transforming CIAJG鈥檚 galleries into a meticulously orchestrated experience. Visitors are led through a spectral and technical choreography, experiencing the gallery as a living, unfolding, and ever-evolving space. The collection of works on view finds its structural foundations鈥攊ts 鈥渟keletons鈥濃攊n drawing and painting, giving rise to digital apparitions or 鈥済hosts鈥 that echo the primordial rhythms of multicellular life.
