Into the Future: New Gifts to Commemorate the Museum's 75th Anniversary
This exhibition features gifts and promised gifts in honor of the museum鈥檚 75th Anniversary. Following Donna MacMillan鈥檚 lead gift of a commissioned sculpture by contemporary Chinese artist Zhan Wang for the entrance to the building, donors have committed significant works that fill important gaps in the collection and elevate its overall quality.
Contemporary artists include Andy Warhol, Louise Bourgeois, David Hockney, and Tom Wesselmann. Design objects reflect the recent emphasis initiated by the new Architecture and Design Center, including works by Frank Gehry, Rudolph Schindler, Robert Wilson, and Fernando and Humberto Campana. Iconic images in photography are represented by Ansel Adams, Paul Strand, and Ed Ruscha. Glass sculptures include works by Dale Chihuly and Klaus Moje.
Holdings in Native American and traditional art of the West are deepened by textiles, pottery, and works by Dan Namingha, Homer Boss, and Francisco Zuniga. Most pivotal in light of the collection鈥檚 history, the exhibition showcases works by artists who played a principal role in the narrative of twentieth-century art history. These include major paintings and sculptures by Jean Arp, Agnes Pelton, Max Ernst, Adolf Gottlieb, Lee Krasner, Hans Hoffman, and Jean Dubuffet. Outstanding graphic works by the twin giants of modernism, Pablo Picasso and Henri Matisse complete this transformation of the museum鈥檚 entire collection.
