Isaac Layman: Paradise

Nov 19, 2011 - Jan 22, 2012
This November the Frye Art Museum presents the first museum exhibition of work by one of Seattle鈥檚 leading artists: Isaac Layman (b. 1977). Layman鈥檚 highly constructed photographic images offer psychologically charged visions of the spaces and objects found in his Seattle home. In Isaac Layman 鈥 Paradise, the artist explores the personal and shared cultural desire to fabricate escapes, destinations, and monuments. As well, he examines the critical role discontent plays in driving the need to create imagined perfection. New photographic-based works created especially for the exhibition will be accompanied by a number of constructions and a projected artwork.

Layman鈥檚 photographic work has garnered increasing attention across the United States and earned reviews on National Public Radio and in leading journals, including Art Papers, Artweek, and Art in America. His works are included in the collections of the Henry Art Gallery, University of Washington; the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; the Norton Museum of Art, West Palm Beach; the Seattle Art Museum; the Tacoma Art Museum; the Margulies Collection at the Warehouse, Miami; and the Monsen Collection of Photography, Seattle. Layman was the recipient of the Seattle Art Museum's Betty Bowen Award in 2008.

Isaac Layman 鈥 Paradise is organized by the Frye Art Museum and curated by Jo-Anne Birnie Danzker. The exhibition is funded by the Frye Foundation with generous support from the Offield Family Foundation, 4Culture, and Frye Art Museum members and donors.
