Isabelle de Ganay
Art and nature very quickly occupied a predominant place in the life of young Isabelle and, when she was only 15 years old, she was accepted to the famous Beaux-Arts in Rouen. This was an honor rarely bestowed on someone so young and an early indication of her talent. In 1976, Isabelle met Albert Malet, the last Impressionist painter of the School of Rouen. Malet had been a student to Robert Antoine Pinchon and he would become Isabelle鈥檚 mentor for the next ten years. Isabelle continued her formal education at the Academie Julian and Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where she was first in her class. Isabelle returned to Rouen, and began exhibiting throughout France. The critics praised her unique style and more exhibitions followed. She was quickly recognized as one of the most representative painters of the Impressionist movement. Malet, who had always been aware of her gift as an artist, designated Isabelle as his successor. Upon his death in 1986, Isabelle assumed his position as Maitre de l鈥橢cole de Rouen. Thus she carries the responsibility of passing on the knowledge and technique of one of the last French schools of art.
Isabelle is a true disciple of le plein air, painting outside in all weather to more fully sense the influence of changes in the atmosphere, the vibrations of the air and the varying light in order to seize and translate to canvas the ephemeral moment. Never betraying the spirit of her work, at the turn of a road, often with her students, Isabelle can be found, painter of nature, always on the theme, traveling France looking for the light, which illuminates her canvasses, dense with warm colors.
Isabelle is married to Baron Philippe de La Pomelie who is a descendent of the General Marquis de La Fayette and, therefore, an honorary citizenof the United States of America. He takes an active role in Isabelle鈥檚 career, not only as an admirer, but discerning critic, invaluable advisor and essential organizer of her many successful exhibitions. They have two sons, Constant and Melchior, who have inherited from their parents a love of Normandy and the outdoors.
Isabelle de Ganay has had numerous successful exhibitions throughout Europe. Her position as a member of the Artistes de Francais and the presence of her works in prestigious collections across France and the rest of the world, is affirmation of her continually expanding reputation as one of the true classic Impressionist painters.
Wally Findlay Galleries is proud to have the opportunity to present this uniquely talented and highly praised French artist.
