JONATHAN SOBOL EVERYDAY PAINTINGS

Nov 06, 2008 - Nov 29, 2008
Jonathan Sobol has been painting for over forty years. His figurative work began with portraiture and sculpture. As Sobol developed as an artist, his paintings evolved as well. His older paintings were compared to Nicolai Fechin and his newer pieces to Matisse and Milton Avery. The new Everyday Paintings are meant to be a means of communication between the observer and the artwork. Painting is a creative question that invites the audience to participate. Using overlapping layers of paint and color, Sobol depicts both the familiar and the abstract. The paintings are often imagined, humorous and witty. Because of the unrestricted nature of his artwork, the viewer is allowed to escape into the 鈥渇un of seeing鈥, inventing their own story. The titles always add an element of interest and surprise, such as 鈥淏oiiing鈥, in which you see a figure that appears to be floating above the Earth. Jonathan studied at the Art Academy of Jerusalem, Betzalel, and later studied privately in New York. His work currently hangs in museums and numerous public collections. Sobol has had innumerable exhibitions all across the U.S. and is collected privately by a large number of people.
