Jennifer Gelardo: Pick-Up Artist
Let鈥檚 try a conceptualisation of desire within the field of today鈥檚 art practices: A conceptualisation of desire within the field of fine art practices today 鈥 a conceptualisation of desire 鈥 desire 鈥 concept 鈥 art.
The bowerbird (zu Deutsch: Laubenvogel), endemic to Australia and New Guinea, lends itself to this conceptualisation of the exhibition as a desired space. If you will, the bower, the seduction chamber that the male bird builds to impress a potential female mating partner, is put together with aesthetical preferences and assumptions. It鈥檚 communicating to rivals and mates alike 鈥 the collected objects, and carefully arranged ornaments are presented as a code. What kind of messages are inscribed in these collages, assemblages and installations we can only assume, but that is not the focus here.
In this case, the behaviour of the bower bird is comparably artful as is the habit of the artistically inclined human being. As viewers and possibly judges of these forms of expression, we can decide whether we subscribe to an individuals desired space or not. The space that an artistic expression of one or more individual鈥檚 creates can be deemed a desired space. As a Wunschort. Do we, as the human species, engage in this sort of behaviour for the purpose of procreation as well?
Okay, so let鈥檚 say that one form of expression in the artistic field can be specified as the installation. Arranged objects. Through these combinations they engage body and eye, not but least their minds are set in motion. And for that motion, the viewer needs a place to feel comfortable observing, as well as do objects need a container to be safely set in. And each container, may it be virtually or physically tangible, has its own rules. These circumstances often must be manipulated by the authoring artist/s in order to communicate with their audiences.
