This new series of paintings - executed while the artist was in Beijing for a few months 鈥 reflects a searching of identity and nationality. Born in China in 1985 and educated in the U.K.,
Jia Jia Wang doesn鈥檛 feel a clear notion of home 鈥 always moving between two radically different cultures, forever looking for his place. Within the paintings, the artist presents his own world: a constructed third space and a possibility to explore his heritage and identity. The work draws a lot from traditional Chinese landscape painting whilst countering it with imagery from more modern sources such as comic books, computer games and films (鈥業t鈥檚 a shame Dorothy is dead鈥). The starting points of the paintings are traditional western fairy tales and ancient Chinese stories. Extracts are cut and pasted together resembling a collage of painterly references: Chinese style epic mountain-scapes mixed with playful references to early platform games (鈥楲evel 4, we鈥檒l never make it鈥) and give a false sense of naivety and childishness.
