Johan Nobell: Uncanny Valley

Oct 04, 2014 - Nov 09, 2014

Johan Nobell's fantastical scenic landscapes depict ominous and haunting carriers of moods and feelings. Strange formations populate the landscapes as monsters grow, evolve, and transform to conquer surrounding areas.

Johan Nobell's own "Uncanny Valley" is a peripheral position in the outskirts of civilization, right where sweeping nature takes over. The monstrous objects can be recognized as organs disrupting natural order. In "Uncanny Valley", these organs are compound and the line between nightmares and lucidity has been erased.

Absurdity is constantly present in Nobell's paintings. The motifs are thoroughly detailed and contoured, and consistently figurative and narrative, but Nobell rejects any linearity and predictability. Illustrating the chain reactions set off by obstacles and choices, Nobell creates a story about the struggle for existence in a beaten and dystopian world. Energetic, senseless discharges traverse wildly through vast landscapes, creating an atmosphere that is both intimidating and promising at the same time.
