Langit at Lupa: Heaven and Earth

Apr 12, 2025 - Apr 26, 2025

Everything on earth seems to remain the same. What has happened to mankind in the past remains the same until now. People鈥檚 actions are never truly remembered, so one鈥檚 everyday acts seem meaningless. One thing is sure that everything has a time. For things created under the sun have a beginning and an end. We have been assured there is heaven at the end of all the world鈥檚 monotony.

In a Biblical sense, we know heaven awaits. People try to search for heaven, or even a piece of it in their lives. No one truly knows what heaven is like. We are told that earth is a preparation for what comes next. Our actions on earth and what we are like inside determine if we are to ever reach such a destination.

Jason Montinola and Kaloy Sanchez picked the title 鈥淟angit and Lupa鈥. Langit translates to Heaven, while Lupa translates to Earth. 鈥淟angit at Lupa鈥 is a group show comprised of works by Bjorn Calleja, Lec Cruz, Kaloy Sanchez, Jason Montinola, Renz Baluyot, Art Sanchez Jr., John Marin, Kim Hamilton Sulit, Paolo Icasas, Auggie Fontanilla, Jomari T鈥檒eon, Kiko Escora, Valerie Chua and Geremy Samala.

They had been given the freedom to interpret what Langit at Lupa means to them. They came up with different interpretations of the phrase. Their works range from death, hope, love, despair, dream, politics, religion, or history. All these are aspects related to Langit at Lupa. The works are not all angelic but also telling of the human condition. Some works are ethereal while some are mundane. All revealing something beyond the surface.

But what are the differences and similarities of heaven and earth? Do we really know the divine and the earthly? One wonders what connects them to each other. But people know there are things on Earth, or Lupa, that make us taste what Heaven, or Langit, is like.
