Langlands & Bell: Near Heaven
鈥楴ear Heaven鈥� is a new work by Langlands & Bell in Vanessa Bell鈥檚 studio at Charleston. In the attic overlooking the garden, the installation explores the space as an artistic refuge, and a place of escape from the outside world and the demands of domestic life.
The title is drawn from a quote by Vanessa Bell and Duncan Grant鈥檚 daughter Angelica Garnett talking about the importance of the attic space to her mother. The free-to-visit installation explores traces of the absent artist and considers the studio as a place of contemplation, creation and retreat.
This is a unique opportunity to explore part of the house which is rarely open to visitors. It is also the first ever contemporary work of art to be installed in the house.
