Lari Pittman: Lo Que Se Ve, Se Pregunta
Lo que se ve, se pregunta is a retrospective exhibition of the artist Lari Pittman (USA, 1952) whose striking and multi-layered paintings have challenged formal pictorial space, cultural representation, and visual culture alike since the 1980s.
The title of the exhibition is a reference to Mexican popular singer Juan Gabriel, who wittily responded to questions about his sexuality with 鈥淟o que se ve, no se pregunta鈥, or 鈥淚f you can see it, don鈥檛 question it鈥. Pittman鈥檚 inversion of this sentiment to insist on questioning what we see, reflects his own constant enquiry into what is and is not made visible.
Lo que se ve, se pregunta presents Pittman鈥檚 practice with the inclusion of new and recent works and pays special attention to the visual and popular cultures of Latin America that have been a significant and on-going point of reference in Pittman鈥檚 practice.
