Liao Shiou-Ping: Simple Noble

Aug 17, 2019 - Sep 29, 2019

Known as Taiwan鈥檚 鈥淔ather of Modern Printmaking,鈥 Liao Shiou-Ping is a versatile artist not limited to print art. His more than 70-year artistic career began at the age of fifteen, and since then he has adventured into the practices of oil painting, print art, and mixed media.  He studied with the Taiwanese masters such as Lee Shih-Chiao and Liao Chi-Chun, from whom he inherited the stance to pilot Taiwan鈥檚 modern and contemporary art. Later, he moved to Japan to study with Matsuki Kazuo and Masato Takahashi to acquire a perfect command of color and composition, and finally to France where he studied with Roger Chastel andS. W. Hayter to mastered oil painting and print art.

Modest and focused, the artist transforms the plain and simple symbols into an aesthetics which is profound and noble. For the past fifty years, he has held numerous solo exhibitions at public art museums, but the upcoming Simple and Noble: The Artistic Path of Liao Shiou-Ping at Liang Gallery, a landmark as it is, will be his first time at a private gallery. The exhibition is a highlight of a contemporary master鈥檚 artistic path with selections from his early works in the 1960s to the latest works in 2019.

In spite of the years spent in the West and the cultural influence that has come with it, Professor Liao Shiou-Ping never abandons the Eastern culture, philosophy, and education which he considers his root. Such a sentiment is infused into his works, visualized through the virtual-versus-real, or yin-versus-yan Eastern philosophy as received in the changing of the seasons. The world is a circle of life to reveal the truth of life, through which the artist perfectly expresses his longing for his native culture while away from home.
