Libbie Mark: Art of the Abstract Mark

Jan 18, 2022 - Feb 25, 2022
Libbie Mark (1905 - 1972) was a familiar figure in the art communities of New York City and Provincetown in the 1950s and 60s. She studied and had connections with Grace Hartigan, Hans Hofmann and Vaclav Vytlacil. Absorbing the impulses and energy of her time, Libbie Mark stood out. A 1962 solo show at Knapik Gallery in Manhattan garnered enthusiastic notices from ARTnews and the Herald Tribune. Positive notices continued as she exhibited with the VECTORS throughout the 1960s. Although her life was cut short, her commitment, intellect and self assurance remain a tribute to her creative endurance and offer us a body of work with a freshness and verve rarely seen today. As time鈥檚 ability to cool and clarify opens the way to re-narration of the post war years in American art, Libbie Mark鈥檚 highly individual vision will be recognized independent of the mainstream. The National Arts Club is most pleased to work with the Libbie Mark Provincetown Fund in co-sponsoring this exhibition.
