Lumière: Lithographs By Odilon Redon

Sep 22, 2009 - Jan 10, 2010
The French Symbolist artist Odilon Redon (1840-1916) wrote: ’My art is limited to the simple resources of light and darkness’. This exhibition, organised in association with the Cambridge Festival of Light, focuses on Redon’s expressive and symbolic use of light, and features many of his most significant and experimental lithographs, all from the Museum’s collection. Redon worked exclusively in black and white for many years, producing works that he called his ’noirs’. The combination of luminous black lithographic ink and glowing paper proved the perfect medium for his mysterious and powerful images. This display includes two series based on Flaubert’s novel The Temptation of Saint Anthony, as well as stand-alone works such as the beautiful and enigmatic Profil de Lumière.
