Margaret A. Keltie: People and Place
Having taught at Sgoil Lionacleit secondary school, Benbecula, for 17 years, Margaret Keltie lived in Baleshare, North Uist. In retirement, her short few years away would not compare with the joy and excitement of the decision to return to Uist, ending up, second time round in Loch Carnan, in the south. Margaret found great satisfaction in all forms of artistic expression; song, dance, writing and in painting, all of which was in the family DNA.
The inspiration for the exhibition 鈥楶eople and Place鈥 of Uist came about as Margaret felt that people at work in Uist were under-represented in the painting medium. Margaret was by no means finished with her aim to represent Uist and its people at their labours when her life was cut unexpectedly short as a result of breast cancer, also in the family DNA.
It is hoped that the impression of love and appreciation for Uist and its 鈥楶eople at Work鈥 shines through this collection at Taigh Chearsabhagh and that they bring you at least as much joy as Margaret would wish to convey. Many of the people and places represented in the exhibition are of the area around where Margaret lived during the last ten years of her life.
Margaret Keltie鈥檚 People and Place is free to view in the Cafe Gallery at Taigh Chearsabhagh from 29th April to 3rd June, Monday-Saturday, 10am-3pm. If you would like to support our continued programming and enable us to keep offering free events, please consider making a donation to Taigh Chearsabhagh.
