Canadian
artist Mark Lewis began his career working with photography then turned to cinema in the mid-1990s. He is interested in developing new approaches to producing and presenting the moving image. He uses fragmentation to take apart the constituent elements of a film in order to extract its filmic essence. This exploration of the language of film draws on past films, using the image and its reception as its materials. Lewis thus brings before us a 鈥渟imulacrum of cinema鈥 and consequently initiates a new idea of the medium, involving close links with painting and photography.
