Masterpieces of Latvian Painting
From 5 July until 24 August 2014, the Art Museum 鈥濺iga Bourse鈥 (6 Dom Square, Old Riga) invites to visit the exhibition from the collection of the Latvian National Museum of Art 鈥濵asterpieces of Latvian Painting. Late 19th 鈥 mid-20th century鈥.
The main historical building of the Latvian National Museum of Art is currently closed to visitors. In the spring of 2013, work began on the reconstruction, restoration and extension of the museum. The aim is to create a modern-day infrastructure for the preservation and display of artworks as well as to provide an optimum environment for the education of the public and a place where free time can be spent with useful content. The project was designed by the Lithuanian architects鈥 office Processoffice in conjunction with the architectonic research group AIG and the engineers B奴ve un forma. The reconstruction, commissioned by the Property Department of the Riga City Council, is being carried out by the construction company RE&RE.
During reconstruction work, public access to the permanent displays of artworks is restricted. Latvia鈥檚 art heritage, currently transferred to temporary storage facilities, is shown at various exhibitions in Latvia and abroad in the form of diverse selections of works encompassing Latvian art phenomena of specific periods and themes.
In summer 2014 aficionados of our art classics and visitors to Riga 鈥 European Capital of Culture will be able to view the finest achievements of Latvian painting in the Great Hall of the Art Museum 鈥濺iga Bourse鈥. The exhibition Masterpieces of Latvian Painting. Late 19th 鈥 mid-20th century will allow viewers to reacquaint themselves with national cultural treasures of the highest quality whose presence in our cultural space is permanent and long-standing.
The selection of works forms an insight into the past of Latvian painting. It reflects the characteristic transformations brought about by new art movements that every creative person has managed to reveal in their individual vision and artistic expressions. These unite in a message of many voices about nature in the homeland, historical events and the life and people that have been observed. At the same time, the exhibition offers viewers the opportunity to examine more closely and admire the uniqueness and professional quality of each individual masterpiece. The relatively short history of painting in Latvia is a testament to the modernisation of visual imagery and form. Over the course of time, local traditions have crossed with conscious searches for national identity and influences from a diversity of European styles and movements. Every successive generation of artists has enriched the overall picture with their experience.
The exhibition will feature some 50 of the most outstanding works by the classics of several generations including K膩rlis H奴ns, J奴lijs Feders, Vilhelms Purv墨tis, Janis Rozent膩ls, Johans Valters, Voldem膩rs Zelti艈拧, J膩zeps Grosvalds, J膿kabs Kazaks, 蘑ederts Eliass, Valdem膩rs Tone, Romans Suta, Aleksandra Be募cova, Uga Skulme, Oto Skulme, Konr膩ds Ub膩ns, J膩nis Liepi艈拧, Leo Svemps, J膩nis T墨demanis, K膩rlis Padegs, Eduards Kalni艈拧, and others.
