Meunier In Seville

Constantin Meunier, up to then known as a painter of historical and religious scenes, stays in Sevilla from October 1882 to April 1883. On request of the Belgian authorities he has to produce a copy of The Deposition from the Cross by Pedro Campa帽a (1503-1580), exhibited in the city cathedral. Before starting his activities Meunier makes acquaintance with the town, its inhabitants and its art, and he paints the picturesque and romantic Spain, colourful scenes of the popular life in Andalusia at that time. The exhibition aim is to bring the principal Sevilla works together again. It contains some 80 works in total, as well preparatory sketches as finished paintings. It deals with the following topics: the commission, the life in the cathedral, the tobacco factory, the flamenco, the bullfights, the beggars, the markets, and the ghostly processions of the Semana Santa. The works have been chosen in the collections of the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium, the Constantin Meunier Museum, the Ixelles Museum, the Royal Museum of Fine Arts of Antwerp, and in private collections.
