On The Brink

Apr 22, 2014 - Jun 08, 2014

A staggering 99.9% of all species that have existed on Earth are now extinct, and 38% of existing flora and fauna are threatened with extinction. On the Brink focuses on the interaction between humans and animals, profiling three categories of species 鈥 those killed off by human causes, those on the verge of extinction, and those that have been successfully rehabilitated. The images in On the Brink were taken by photographers from around the world, while drawings of the earliest extinct species provide an visual of what those pre-photography animals looked like.

More than 1,000 species have gone extinct in the past 500 years, which does not account for the myriad flora and fauna that existed before proper documentation was available. For every story of a species disappearing there is a story of successful regeneration. In order to create more success stories and reduce extinction stories, more protections are vital. DDT bans, The Endangered Species Act of 1972 and the IUCN Red List are shining examples of the power human beings have to combat the destruction of their fellow global inhabitants. On the Brink is meant to inspire others to follow in those footsteps.
