Open Buffet: Almost a Decade of Fueradcarta
Fueradcarta is a genuinely Madrid-based publishing project, born in 2017 under the guiding hands of artists Patricia Mateo and Jos茅 Luis L贸pez Moral. From the outset, the aim of the publishing house has been to create an atlas of the contemporary art scene in Spain, offering limited editions of artists鈥 books at affordable prices.
Each edition consists of one hundred numbered booklets, each signed by the artist and accompanied by an original work. Their main objective is to find a different way to disseminate the work of Spanish creators. Fueradcarta was launched almost a decade ago after a series of self-publishing experiments on the part of its founders, who at the time were committed to mapping the artists with whom they were in close contact.
This gives rise to an initial more 鈥渁mateur鈥 phase, as Mateo and L贸pez del Moral put it. Over time, the two entrepreneurs have had access to all types of creative people, ranging from mid-career artists such as Estefan铆a Mart铆n S谩inz, Santiago Yd谩帽ez or Rosal铆a Banet to more established artists such as Rafael Canogar or Roberto 骋辞苍锄谩濒别锄 Fern谩ndez, without forgetting the younger generation, represented by Jan Matthews or Silvia Lermo, for example.
Their primary concern is to encourage people to build up a collection of art, starting with small works by contemporary artists, and to use these publications to showcase the different artistic currents of Spanish art today. The seventy-one editions that they have published to date (their mission is to produce a hundred) cover the current trends in Spanish contemporary art through the eyes of its creators.
The aim of the "Open Buffet" exhibition is to introduce the general public to the work that this small publishing house has produced in its almost ten years of existence, a review of all its numbers that also allows us to take a snapshot of the Spanish art scene in recent years.
By way of a timeline, a copy of each of the seventy one issues published to date adorns the gallery wall. Each book is accompanied by the serially numbered original work by the artist, which is included with each number. Similarly, and to enhance the content of the exhibition, current and recent works by some twenty-one creators who have already worked with Fueradcarta are inserted between the books, allowing the visitor to gain a deeper insight into their work above and beyond what was commissioned by the publishing house, and at the same time, to appreciate how it has evolved since the book was published.
