Open Collection
Inspired by the ambiance of technical reserves 鈥 areas with restricted access where artworks are stored 鈥 Open Collection is an experimental exhibition that presents itself as an extension of this place, while offering the public the opportunity to observe the procedures involved in preserving and exhibiting contemporary propositions.
Open Collection was conceived by an interdisciplinary group composed of different professionals and areas of the MAC USP, and chose horizontality as an organizational strategy, alternating moments of coordinating the work. The indexes of the activities of a technical reserve were the guiding principles of the actions, including the selection of artworks. The criterion took into account the exhibition history of the works, favoring those that had never been exhibited and/or where the last exhibition was more than 10 years ago, including newly donated works that had not yet been exhibited at the MAC USP.
The arrangement of the artworks is also motivated by the logic of storage 鈥 they are zones of materiality that refer to the concreteness, tangibility and illumination of these objects. In some sections of the exhibition, the juxtaposition of different materials is evident 鈥 a feature of contemporary production that does not adhere to traditional art categories (painting, sculpture, printmaking, etc.). In other areas, the lighting respects the materiality 鈥 the conservational measurement 鈥 and the eye has to adjust to the new exhibition situation. And in others, the works are protected, especially those on paper media as a preventive measure. As with the technical reserves, works of art can be removed for participation in exhibitions at the MAC USP or other museums.
Finally, within the realm of extroversion, visitors to Open Collection have the opportunity to delve into the realm of possibilities offered by a technical reserve, the significance of materials, and most importantly, the conditions that shape the research and preservation efforts surrounding contemporary objects.
